Useful stuff. No problems encountered.
Mostly I apply this oil to wood that will be deployed outdoors though I have also used it to seal brickwork. Whenever possible I warm the oil gently to about body temperature as this reduces the viscosity and allows it to penetrate the wood more readily -- both faster and deeper. For the grain-ends of timber my preferred method of application is to stand the wood in a container of luke-warm oil and let capillary action carry the oil up into the timber. Note that the oil should be only luke-warm, and no warmer -- if you stand wood in hot oil the wood is likely to split as air and moisture within the grain expands and tries to escape. Also, heating the oil will cause the volatile compounds to evaporate more rapidly and causing the oil to become more viscous. While wet the oil has a fairly typical linseed odour. If the oil is applied using a brush or rag then it should be applied in thin coats. A first thin coat can be dry within half a day, perhaps as little as two hours if conditions are favourable. Subsequent coats can take longer to dry -- perhaps a couple of days even in favourable conditions. If the oil is applied thickly it can remain tacky for years. The colour is, as per the picture, a deep reddish orange so it does change and darken the appearance of whatever it is applied to.Should I need more boiled linseed oil I'd certainly consider this product and would purchase it again if I found the price to be satisfactory. I've found the price of this stuff varies considerably and that browsing suppliers is worthwhile.
